Abstract
Inflammatory optic neuropathies are common in clinical practice and a wide variety of illnesses produce inflammation of the optic nerves, i.e., optic neuritis (ON). Atypical forms of ON can occur, either in association with other inflammatory disorders or in isolation. The differential diagnosis is extensive, and prognosis and treatment depend on the cause. Substantial developments have occurred in diagnostic work-up, understanding of pathophysiology, and treatment approaches in ON. In this article, we examine current thinking on the mechanisms of immune injury in ON, discuss novel technologies for the assessment of optic nerve structure and function, and assess current and future treatment modalities.
